Internet mergers and takeovers

There’s an interesting article in the Economist this week about internet mergers and acquisitions. It cites Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr for $1.1 billion on May 20th, Google’s highly successful acquisition of YouTube and Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram. Aside from technical challenges of grafting one platform to another there are financial and cultural questions to consider, for example, Tumblr’s boss, David Karp, stressed that the deal with Yahoo would leave Tumblr with plenty of independence—“We’re not turning purple,” he wrote, referring to the corporate colour scheme of its new owner—before signing off with a distinctly uncorporate: “Fuck yeah, David.”
